What does a $10,000 kitchen remodel get you?

At $10,000, a kitchen remodel is a cosmetic makeover, not a rebuild. The cabinets stay and get painted, the counters are replaced with laminate, and new lighting, a faucet and a backsplash do the rest. In a small kitchen, Renovue's planning range for that work is $7,000–$13,000.

What moves the price

Starting from this page's combination, how far each decision can move Renovue's planning cost, with everything else unchanged:

Renovue's ranges use national planning assumptions for a typical single-family home. Labor rates, material prices and permit requirements vary by region, and older homes often hide problems that only show up once walls and floors are opened. Compare several local bids that each list the same scope.

Questions

Can you remodel a kitchen for $10,000?
Yes, if the cabinet boxes are solid and the layout works. $10,000 pays for a cosmetic remodel: painted cabinets, new laminate counters, a backsplash, lighting and a faucet. It doesn't pay for new cabinets, which are the largest cost in most kitchen remodels.
Is $10,000 enough for quartz countertops?
In a small kitchen, yes: painted cabinets with quartz can still land in the $10,000 tier. Quartz costs more than twice as much as laminate in Renovue's model, though, so in a medium kitchen the same work moves into the $15,000 tier. Try both in the calculator on this page.
What should I spend $10,000 on first in a kitchen?
Start with what you see most: painted cabinets with new hardware, lighting and the backsplash change the look of the whole room. New counters come next. Keep working appliances and sound flooring; replacing either takes money away from the rest.
Does a $10,000 kitchen remodel need a permit?
Painting, new laminate counters and a like-for-like faucet often don't, but new light fixtures and any electrical or plumbing changes may, depending on where you live. Ask your contractor or local building department before work starts.
