Renovue

What does a $25,000 basement remodel get you?

$25,000 finishes a basement in its existing footprint: drywall on the walls and ceiling, waterproof luxury vinyl flooring, recessed lighting and new furniture. It assumes the space is already dry and the ceiling height works. Renovue's planning range for this budget is $20,000–$32,000.

One tier down, one tier up

What moves the price

Renovue's ranges use national planning assumptions for a typical single-family home. Labor rates, material prices and permit requirements vary by region, and older homes often hide problems that only show up once walls and floors are opened. Compare several local bids that each list the same scope.

Check these before you price a basement

Renovue's basement estimate doesn't account for square footage, and basements vary more than any other room. A small, dry, already-framed basement finishes very differently from a large, unfinished one.

Moisture comes first. Finishing over a damp wall traps the problem behind drywall, so get any leaks, grading or drainage fixed before the finish work starts.

A bedroom in a basement usually needs an egress window, and a bathroom needs plumbing that may sit below the sewer line. Both are priced separately from this range; ask contractors for them as their own line items.

Questions

Can you finish a basement for $25,000?
A modest one, yes, if it's dry and the ceiling height works. $25,000 covers drywall, waterproof vinyl flooring, recessed lighting and furnishings in the existing footprint. A bathroom, bedroom or water repairs cost extra.
What flooring is best for a $25,000 basement?
Waterproof luxury vinyl plank is the usual choice: it handles the moisture basements are prone to and costs less than tile or engineered wood. Ask about a vapor barrier or subfloor if the slab is cold or uneven.
Does a $25,000 basement include a bathroom?
No. Adding a bathroom means new plumbing, often below the sewer line, and that's priced separately. Treat it as its own project and get a separate quote for it.
Do I need a permit to finish a basement?
Usually. Finishing a basement typically involves framing, electrical work and sometimes egress requirements, all of which most local building departments regulate. Your contractor should pull the permit.
